About the Wine
Fans of The Prisoner will like this broadly juicy blend of 81% Merlot with Syrah, Petite Sirah and Malbec. Thorn is sourced from acclaimed vineyard sites throughout the Napa Valley. The family of small vineyards offers vines of varying ages and regionality, lending to layers of character and complexity. The label which I love is a photograph of a wire wolf sculpture entitled, “Thorn” by Portuguese artist, David Oliviera.
Winemaker Notes
Earthy aromas open up into cocoa, blackberry, cedar, and anise. The entry is smooth with flavors of cherry, chocolate, vanilla, and a mild toastiness. The finish is long with balanced acidity.
Food Pairings
I paired this wine with Grilled Chicken and my favorite pear salad, made with avocado, blue cheese and candied walnuts.
Other great options are dishes like roast beef, a tomato pasta dish, filet or lamb.
The Wine Down
I’m normally not a Merlot drinker, I tried this wine during a tasting in Napa and was amazingly pleased. It was just what I would expect from a Prisoner Wine. This wine is bolder than your typical Merlot. The Merlot was blended with Syrah to create depth in the body while Malbec and Petite Sirah accentuate the fruit. It is extremely well balanced and smooth. I literally fell in love with it.
It’s priced between $35 – $40.
