About the Wine
Barbera is originally grown in Northern Italy, it is known for it’s deep color, full body, low tannins and high levels of acidity. However, Barbera has rapidly began to spread across the globe to regions such as the USA, Argentina, and even the Cape wine producing regions of South Africa. Today there are over 250 wineries that produce Barbera in California. Most of these wineries are located in The Sierra Foothills. These wineries have declared that Barbera is their Landmark wine or hidden gem. Rombauer handpicks their fruit from theirs estate vineyard located in the Sierra Foothills of Amador County. Only 350 cases of this unique and delicious wine were produced. This is the third vintage of Rombauer’s Barbera that I’ve tasted and I can only say it keeps getting better.
A beautiful deep purple with bright red highlights in color, the nose is a complex medley of bright red fruits, sour cherry, dried briar, and spice hints. Richer in texture than the nose implies, the palate has dark black fruit flavors with anise and clove spice notes. Soft tannins and bright acidity, both typical of Barbera, round out the palate which finishes with notes of lingering red cherry.
Barbera is one of the most food friendly wines. Due to it being low in mouth drying tannins and high in acidity, it makes it the perfect wine to pair with rich foods like blue cheese, rich dark meats and earthy mushrooms.
