2018 Frank Family Reserve Chiles Valley Zinfandel

About the Wine

While California Zinfandel can be produced in various styles, ranging from light to full-bodied, they all exhibit a certain fruit forwardness that is frequently described as “jammy”. It is also known for licorice, spicy and peppery notes. Zinfandel has gotten a bad reputation from the abundant jugs of cheap, pink “white zin” lining the bottom shelves of many grocery store chains. However, this grape variety produces quality red wines that are food-friendly, versatile and delicious. Frank Family Reserve Zin comes from Chiles Valley. Chiles Valley is about 800 feet above sea level and the high peaks are about 1200 feet which makes it very cold, much colder than the Napa Valley floor. It’s a unique place because Chiles Valley is not really a valley. It is a drainage of two creeks, Sage and Chiles, that both go into the Napa River.

Varietal Composition 89% Zinfandel, 11% Petite Sirah.

Winemaker Notes

Dusty sage and misty forest aromas lead to deep, layered and focused flavors of plum, dark fig and dark chocolate. The palate delivers freshness, combining mixed black and red berries with a hint of baking spices. Its exploding ripe fruit flavors are balanced by a backbone of bright acidity.

Food Pairings

This Zinfandel is outstanding when paired with barbecued red meats and bold cheeses, as its strong flavor profile can stand up to robust flavors. The fruit forwardness of this bold wine is balanced out by medium to high tannins, lending the wine firm structure.

The Wine Down

If you’re planning a trip to Napa Valley, make sure to visit The historic Frank Family Vineyards. Nestled in the shade of centuries-old Elm trees, Frank Family’s iconic tasting room has been a part of Napa Valley’s landscape for nearly 30 years. Both classic and contemporary, their home for guests embodies the spirit of family that drives everything they do. I suggest booking the Wines Winston Hill Tasting. This flight allows you to taste their reserve wines which most are not availble in stores. This unique experience will take place in their yellow 1930s craftsman house and throughout their park-like property. You will also hear the fascinating story of how Rich Frank, went from being the President of Disney Studios to owning one of the most prestigious wineries in the Napa Valley.

You can find this bottle for $60.00
